THE ADRENALINE KICKS IN - SOMETHING IS WRONG!
We are rolling onto the runway when something begins to smell a little weird. We think nothing of it. Sometimes it just smells funny.
We give thrust and accelerate. Suddenly it smells stronger and stronger and more and more intense. The air becomes oppressive and stuffy, filled with an unknown gas that very quickly robs us of clean breathing air.
The adrenaline rises - something is wrong! At about two-thirds into take-off, there is a short and highly dynamic conversation in the cockpit in which we briefly evaluate the situation. Immediately we decide to abort. We hit the brakes hard and roll off the runway, open the cockpit windows, and switch off the air conditioning.
The air gets better and fresher again. Finally! It was the right thing to do to abort take-off. In the cabin, everyone, crew, and passengers, without exception, had perceived the gas. We couldn't imagine what would have happened if we had already taken off. It turned out afterward that probably remnants of hydraulic fluid had evaporated in the air conditioning system.
