Exposure to dangerous NANO particles from various jet engine sources! UNFILTERED team recommends that a high quality mask should be part of your hand luggage. Always carry a high quality carbon activated face mask with you when you fly. Consider writing to all the airlines you fly with demanding they provide you with PROOF that the air you will breathe on board will not be contaminated with ANY LEVELS of toxic chemicals and if you do suffer any ill effects after your flight please report them to the Offices of Civil Aviation. "A breathing mask (with a suitable filter) will protect people in "harsh environments" (quote) with which the air contamination after an attack with chemical weapons is meant. The aircraft cabin should not be quite such a "harsh environment". Therefore, a breathing mask will give good protection in similar cases where people have become ill in the aircraft cabin as a result from the air becoming contaminated with oil/kerosene and other toxic fumes. When used correctly, a soft mask or respirator can selectively reduce the amount of pollutants you might otherwise inhale. There are many kinds of masks to protect from air pollution available on the market and companies that specialize; often these companies produce a variety of masks for the workplace environment which are rarely available in sizes that fit children. ‘Soft’ foldable masks for your hand luggage, purse or pocket. When looking for a small, foldable mask with good protection you should always check out the technology they use. It should indicate for which particulates, VOC’s, type of fumes, smoke, gas etc. the specific mask is good for, and that it has an 'activated carbon' filter. It has to have an adjustable nose-clip and toggles on the chin part to not allow air in from below. Looking far and wide also for kids’ sizes, we came across the following company, which provides 5 different sizes, the smallest one to fit a baby weighing 6 -10kg (indicating roughly from about 2 months old). They also provide their technology and their ‘Official Testing Results’ (same page bottom right). N99 test report and certification can be viewed here. The CambridgeMask - What does the mask filter? 99.7% average particulate filtration down to 0.3 microns

In the end it is a case of "trial and error" regarding the fit and comfort of any one mask/ brand. It is very important that you take your time to adjust them properly to your face and of course get the right size in the first place.
Important NOTE:
Please be aware that no mask company will guarantee that all particulates, gasses, fumes or individual components will be filtered by using foldable masks, not even when using half-face or full-face masks with cartridges! Cartridges usually filter specific chemical particulates, not all. The only true protection would be given and guaranteed by wearing a hazmat suit with built in CO cartridges and connected pressurized oxygen (=compressed air filter) in which case you would be in a unit which is cut-off from the environment, similar to workers in a chemical factory/ laboratory or other work environment with health hazardous chemicals! There are countless toxic substances which are known to cause neurological problems. Short-term exposure to excessive amounts of these substances is known to cause brain damage. Long-term exposure to small amounts can cause brain damage as well. Organic compounds : to mention one in particular is toluene, which can result in dementia, visual problems, brain atrophy, and balance and coordination problems. Some other side effects are headaches, dizziness, mental confusion and fatigue. Emotional problems have been linked to exposure to solvents, such as depressive tendencies, social withdrawal and anxiety. It can also result in Alzheimer's Syndrome. Other common cases of brain injury and damage result from exposure to pesticides and carbon monoxide. Pesticides are used for killing various bugs and other insects. There are numerous pesticides and many of them are proven to have neurological effects on humans. Pesticide poisoning can occur due to ingestion, inhalation and skin contact. It is important to use safety protection when using or working with pesticides. View the list of toxic substances so far measured in aircraft cabin air HERE |
